Yesterday marked the beginning of a new season of Magic Tuesdays at La Seca Espai Brossa. French magician Vincent Hedan visited the theater in Barcelona’s Born district.
I like mentalists who play with intelligence. This is certainly the case with Vincent Hedan. He tells us that what he does is based on intuition, meaning that he never openly tells us he is a mentalist, and I like that… And within that boundary where mentalism always seems to exist, he shows us that intuition is a faculty that he has developed, or that the spectators themselves possess, thanks to the subtleties of illusionism… And all of this reaches truly inexplicable levels…
He performed effects of his own creation: he divines the zodiac sign of a randomly selected spectator; he conducts an invisible wine tasting and identifies a wine invented by three spectators; he reveals a thought-of card in an incredible way; he magically perceives words from a book; and one routine which, in my opinion, is a work of art: his demonstration of memorizing the number Pi, an effect that transports us into an incredible world where everything, absolutely everything, is foretold within the infinite digits of this number so beloved by mathematicians, which in this routine becomes an enigmatic concept…
Everything is performed with elegance, with excellent presentations of the magical effects and exquisite treatment of the spectators. He is approachable, seems like a genuinely nice guy, warm and friendly, and performs a kind of mentalism that is not frightening, but captivates through its effectiveness. You go home thinking about the miracles you have witnessed, fiendishly well constructed and performed.
A wonderful evening… These nights at La Seca Espai Brossa are a great opportunity to see illusionists we might otherwise never have the chance to encounter, were it not for the circuit of international magicians visiting the city… Mark it in your calendar: the next Magic Tuesday is on October 25, with Eric Roumestan as the guest…
Take a look at the Pi routine, which I absolutely loved… I love the fact that an effect involving numbers can have such a well-thought-out story, one that captivates every spectator in the room. It is the kind of routine that the lucky spectator who gets to participate will surely never forget…
For the illusionists reading this, I think it is a real pleasure to see magic that is so thoughtfully conceived and explained. Vincent Hedan’s website features free videos in which he offers advice on how to present his effects. Videos that reveal just how much care this artist puts into the way he approaches our art. He is a magician with an extensive résumé and, in addition to lecturing around the world, he has collaborated with David Blaine, published a book on mentalism, and translated major works of magic literature into French… I have a lot of faith in dedicated magicians who write about magic…
