여고괴담 2: Memento Mori

여고괴담 2: Memento Mori

Magical inspiration comes from lesbian schoolgirls in Korea. Released in 1999, it’s my favorite movie out of the series I first discussed in a previous post. The release of the first movie gave a bad image of south korean schools; this second movie goes even further. And adds another taboo: lesbianism. However it is not an erotic movie, as the director doesn’t address the sexual aspect of the relationship but rather the complex link between two persons who in that movie happen to be two young women. The plot revolves around a shared diary, something that is quite common in south korean schools....

Why Use A Stack?

Why Use A Stack?

You heard of the principle of a stack, rosary or memorized deck, and you may be wondering if it’s worth embarking on this adventure. Why use a stack? Why not use one? What will this tool bring to your magic? All excuses are good to procrastinate Let’s start with the (untrue) clichés on the subject, and the bad reasons to start learning a stack.I sometimes hear people say they don’t want to use a memorized deck, because: «The deck can’t be shuffled.» In magic, what counts is not what you do, but what you appear to do. 여고괴담 (Yeogo Goedam) : Whispering Corridors

A discussion on the representation of the students’ situation in the south-korean education system. And a bit of magic too.     Yeogo Goedam? (pronounced yogo gedam in english)What is this weird thing? It’s the title of a south-korean movie, and of a 5-movie series. It is unlikely you have seen any of these movies in a theater ; the USA have a completely unfair agreement on cinema with South Korea, and Hollywood much prefers to buy the rights of Korean movies to later remake (destroy) them for the America market, convinced that the American public is too dumb to appreciate foreign...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a video game released in 2011. Why talk about a video game on a magic blog? Because this game is the occasion to make a parallel between the two worlds and to find inspiration in the bridges that are created. But before I start, here is the trailer for the game: When I saw the trailer months ago, I was fascinated by the music, the protagonist’s voice (a kind of Clint Eastwood in a film noir) and the interesting discrepancy with the modern aspect of the game’s universe. When I played, one of my old...

Choosing A Stack

Choosing A Stack

A new year begins, it’s time for resolutions, and you’re thinking: «Hey, what if I learned a stack?». Good. However, with the multitude of stacks available in magic literature, how will you choose? There are some traps to avoid during the selection of your stack, and I will try to give you some leads, based on my experience and on comments I often hear on the subject.  When you decide to choose a stack, you can walk 3 different paths. You can take a deck, shuffle it and memorize it; or you can choose a stack that exists already;...
